Cut Scenes
When we decided to produce a comic from the film script, we had to do plenty of revisions to adapt the idea to the medium.
Physical comedy is something that requires action. Translating that effectively to a series of static images just isn’t funny and so a few of those moments where cut.
This scene is a prime example. In the film script it comes as they are first travelling in Chuck’s ‘71 Boss Mustang to the Defence Research Facility. As Vera pushes the car (which is out of petrol) Dave begins to reminisce to Chuck about the time he met Vera.
The following dialogue went along with this scene.
DAVE
Do you remember when we first met CHUCK, me and VERA? I can remember it like it was yesterday…
EXTERIOR. DAY. SCHOOL PLAYGROUND
(FLASHBACK SEQUENCE) Kids are playing and the sun is shining. DAVE’S dressed in MC Hammer style happy pants and a Hyper-Colour T-shirt. He has on Converse CONS (with the BIG tongue) and is sporting an atrocious 1990’s haircut (Vanilla Ice style). He is riding his BMX bike down the footpath with a cassette walkman proudly on display.
DAVE (V.O.)
Ahhh VERA, I can still remember the first time I laid eyes on here. She was as innocent as a snowflake.
We see VERA at a bus stop, an obviously adult woman dressed in s school uniform and looking outrageously hot and slutty. She is sucking a lollipop with overtly sexual overtones. DAVE spots her and proceeds to do a ‘wheely’ on his bike whilst riding past. As he rounds the corner he runs smack into a tree.
INTERIOR. DAY. CHUCK’S CAR.
DAVE is rubbing his head in memory of the injury he sustained.
CHUCK
Good times man, good times!
DAVE turns again and stick his head out of the window.
DAVE
Step it up babe. I’m staring to get thirsty!
